How to Create a Family Time Capsule

Creating a family time capsule can be a fun activity for the entire family. Whether you do it during a holiday, special family occasion or just to be together as a family, everyone can take part. You can ask each family member to contribute items specific to a family event or to cover a specific time period. It can also be fun to just ask your family to contribute items that have meaning to them at that point in their lives. Once your capsule is complete, decide on the amount of time that should elapse before you open it. You and your family can have a lot of fun when you open the capsule and see the memories that it holds. Here are a couple of ideas to help you start on your own family time capsule.

Special Event Time Capsules

A yearly time capsule can be a fun way to remember holidays or birthdays. The opening of the family time capsule can be part of your holiday tradition, as would be the creation of the new capsule. Looking through the time capsule and remembering items that were important to family members the previous year can be an exciting and fun stroll down memory lane. You can encapsulate a child's birthday by including party photos, a list of guests and gifts received, party favors or other mementos. Or, include holiday photos, cards, family members or guests who helped you celebrate and other special holiday memorabilia. The time capsule can be a plastic bin, a cardboard box or other type of container in an appropriate size. Once the capsule is opened you may want to enjoy the photos that have been hidden away by displaying them in a collage picture frame, and you are ready to create a new family time capsule for more family fun.

Every Day Time Capsules

No need to wait for a special occasion to create a family time capsule. You can create a time capsule at any time and for any reason, or no reason at all other then looking for a fun way to entertain your children. And, your children can be entertained for hours when you have fun together gathering items and creating a capsule. Let each family member find items to place in the capsule and don't forget family photos so when you open the capsule you can see how much they have grown. Also, be sure the date is in the capsule by including a magazine or newspaper or just note it on a piece of paper. Including items that you come across everyday can make opening your capsule great fun. Items that were important when the capsule was created may be a forgotten item by the time the capsule is opened. An every day time capsule can have historical value also if you include articles or memorabilia for what was happening in your city, state, country or the world. If the capsule has been saved for many years, it can be an exciting stroll down memory lane when you open it. You can keep the nostalgia alive for a while longer after you open your time capsule by placing some of the items in a shadow box picture frame to display as a reminder of the fun you and your family had together creating and then opening your family time capsule.
